At the 2011 Annual Veteran’s Memorial concert, OSUMB Assistant Director, Jon Waters, announced Jason Stuckert as the 2011 Most Inspirational Bandsperson. Jason is the 10th Drum Major to win the award, and the 4rd Drum Major in the past 10 years to win as well. The Most Inspirational Bandsperson award is recognized as the top honor given by the marching band to any member. What makes it so special is that the recipient is selected by votes from all Marching Band Peers and Directors.

Jason Stuckert is a junior Marketing major from Avon Lake Ohio. Before coming to Ohio State Jason was a two-year drum major for Avon Lake High School and an active participant in the Drum Major training program throughout his high school years.

The Most Inspirational Bandperson Award is in its 54th year, with the first recipient being bandsman V. James Polidora in 1957.

OSU drum major Jason Stuckert came back to where it all started last week and enjoyed an Avon Lake Shoremen homecoming. With flash, flair, sky-high baton tosses and the traditional OSU backbend on display, Stuckert wowed the crowds while performing with the Avon Lake marching band during the Sept. 16 football game and at the Sept. 17 Band-a-Rama.

Stuckert, who is in his second season as OSU drum major, says he is living a dream that began when he was 12. Inspired by watching Avon Lake’s drum majors, Stuckert practiced diligently and began attending clinics in Columbus.

His hard work and training paid off. He served as Avon Lake’s drum major for three years before graduating in 2009. Stuckert then spent one year on OSU’s D-Row, which is the drum major training squad, before being selected as drum major in 2010.

David Eddleman, band director at Avon Lake, isn’t surprised by Stuckert’s success.

“He treats it as much as a science as he does an art. He is very consistent, very focused and has a great stage presence,” Eddleman said.

Returning to perform with the Marching Shoremen last weekend, Stuckert said, was his way of giving back to a school and community that supported him as he pursued his dreams.

Stuckert would love to see Avon Lake build on its legacy of producing OSU drum majors, which is why he conducted a drum major clinic for about 20 students on Sept. 17. Joining Stuckert were brothers Eric and Scott Sommer (the only other OSU drum majors to hail from Avon Lake), and JD Johnson and Nathan MacMaster, who are members of this year’s D-Row.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the opportunities I had at Avon Lake. The school administrators and teachers, Mr. Eddleman, and the support from students, family and friends provided the platform for me to excel,” he said. “Now I can return and say thank you and hopefully encourage others to reach for their dreams.”

Leading the OSU Marching Band on game days is only part of the job of serving as the Buckeyes’ drum major. Stuckert is in high demand and makes personal appearances to promote the university, contributes his time to charitable organizations, conducts clinics and performs with the OSU Alumni Band.

Stuckert said he is enjoying what will be his final year as drum major, but is looking forward to continuing to serve as a university ambassador and to what lies ahead once he marches off the field for the last time.

“Having the chance to perform with an amazing college marching band, the people I’ve met and the off-field experiences — I’ll miss that when it’s all done,” Stuckert said. “This has been a major part of my life for a long time, but once the season is over it will be time to move on to other things.”

This past weekend, the OSUMB had a bit of "down-time," as they did not travel on Saturday to Miami, FL with the Buckeye football team. Drum Major Jason Stuckert took the opportunity to visit his hometown of Avon Lake, Ohio. On Friday night he performed with the Avon Lake Shoreman Marching Band during the football game. On Saturday, he led a Drum Major camp at Avon Lake High School. Fifteen students attended the camp, which included several current high school drum majors from Northeast Ohio. Jason had coaching help from Alumni Drum Majors Scott Sommer '98 and Eric Sommer '04, (also Avon Lake grads and Ohio State Drum Majors.. and yes brothers too) as well as several D-Row members; Kishan Patel (Elyria H.S. grad), Nathan MacMaster (Reynoldsburg H.S. grad), and JD Johnson (Gahanna Lincoln H.S. grad).

"The goal of the camp was to boost interest in drum majoring, specifically in the Avon Lake/Northern Ohio area. This has definitely been accomplished." said Jason Stuckert.

To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Script Ohio, also known as one of the greatest traditions in college sports, the halftime featured four FULL 192-piece Script Ohio formations (1 regular band, 3 alumni bands). One of the surprise honorary i-dotters was Les Wexner. This i-dot was not revealed until Skull Session. In addition to the celebration and surprises, Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee announced the retirement of Director Dr. Jon R. Woods in June. After his 28th season as director, and his 38th season with the band, Dr. Woods has one of the longest running tenures for an Ohio State Marching Band director. Dr Woods will greatly be missed as director of the OSUMB, and his legacy for balancing innovation and traditions will be remembered well. Alumni look forward to seeing him participate with TBDBITL Alumni Band in the coming years as well.

Dr. Jon Waters, current Assistant Band Director of TBDBITL, will serve as interim Band Director next year.

  • 2011 OSUMB Announced – So, who made D-row?

    • September 1, 2011

This past Wednesday nine candidates tried out for a spot on the 2011 Drum Major training squad (also known as D-row). The candidates were evaluated on their marching skills, strutting and twirling skills. Judges included the OSUMB Directing staff, Drum Major, Jason Stuckert, Assistant Drum Major Kyle West and several Alumni Drum Majors. Six of these students were selected.  The competition was intense, as 5 of the selected members were returning for their 2nd year on the row.

    The new D-row members include:

    - JD Johnson, OSU Sophomore (from Gahanna Lincoln H.S.,) – 2nd year member
    - Shawn Wiler-Martin, OSU Sophomore (from Streetsboro H.S.) – 2nd year member
    - Nate MacMaster, OSU Sophomore (Reynoldsburg H.S.) – 2nd year member
    - Kishan Patel, OSU Sophomore (Elyria H.S.). – 1st year member
    - David Petitt, OSU Sophomore (Portsmouth H.S.) – 2nd year member
    - Josh Robinson, OSU Sophomore  (Dublin Scioto) – 2nd year member

“This year we have a very experienced D-row squad,” said 2003 Alumni Drum Major, Kathryn Mitchell. “It’s a great group of talented students and we expect to see great growth from them over the season.”

    A little about D-row

D-row was established in 1979 to provide a training ground for hopeful Drum Majors to refine their skills and to carry on the tradition of innovative and inspiring OSU Drum Majors.

D-row members train at practice as if they are back-up Drum Majors to the Head and Assistant. On game days, they fill much needed areas of the band including filling in marching slots when all instrumental alternates are marching and there is an injury or illness. They assist the Directors with props and conducting ladders, and generally help the Drum Major and Assistant with their various game day duties. In return for this work on game day, the candidates get front row seats to observe and understudy Drum Major and band. This experience provides an atmosphere to learn and grow in their techniques. D-row is a unique element of The Ohio State Marching Band. Learn more about D-Row.

Congrats JD, Shawn, Nate, Kishan, David & Josh!
